DR Congo (democratic republic of Congo). Prior to 2003, no coffee from the Congo was certified Fair Trade. This coffee is super unique in that it is both Fair Trade and Organic. This coffee is from North Kivu and came from the SOPACDI Cooperative. SOPACDI was started in 2003 by a farmer named Joachim Munganga who wanted to provide more opportunity for farmers to sell their coffee. Prior to SOPACDI many farmers had no way to get their coffee to market and therefore were forced to trade their coffee as a means to provide for their basic needs like food and clothing. Now SOPACDI has 5,600 members with roughly 20% of them are women. Members of the cooperative represent several different ethnic groups, speaking Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, and Kihavu, and many of the women members are widows. We felt this was a great Cooperative, we were very excited about the progress being made within the coffee industry in DR Congo and wanted to support their work by bringing in this outstanding coffee.
